A brief introduction to this fine new school. You’ll want to head over to the official school website for up-to-date details, class enrollment, and plenty more —

Take one look around the school itself – brought to life almost entirely by one man, in the space of one year – and you know you’re in good hands to learn. Having the opportunity to go through both foundational classes, I find myself with a respectable set of skills, and an invaluable set of memories I’d simply never get working on my own. Wally is two things that you rarely come across in one instructor – masterful and patient. Throughout the course, at just the right moments, he’d calmly say one deceptively simple sentence that I return to almost daily – ”Remember, it’s not a race.” That sort of commonsense encouragement – and his technical mastery of whichever tool you put in front of him – that’s the kind of place you want to be. It’s a damn privilege to have this school come back into existence, decades after the first one closed its doors for the last time – with all the authenticity and character I’d imagine it once had – but has a presence and personality all its own. If you want to learn – the right way, in an ideal space, alongside fine people – you owe it to yourself to spend your time here.

Meet your instructor,

Wallace Kunkel

— Master woodworker & son of the incredible Mr. Sawdust.

Wally Kunkel has spent his entire woodworking career satisfying the most particular customers. He was the first winner of the Excellence in Craftsmanship award, sponsored by American Woodworker Magazine. He has created fine furniture and cabinetry for private clients and museums alike - and now he’s bringing the Mr. Sawdust School of Professional Woodworking back to pass his knowledge to everyone, from amateurs to seasoned pros.

At age sixteen Wally produced his first museum-quality piece of furniture on commission. That entitles him to claim a professional career of 43 years and counting. His foundation in woodworking comes from his ancestry, mostly his father, Wallace M. Kunkel, known to the nation as “Mr. Sawdust.“ The senior Mr. Kunkel was the founder of a legendary woodworking school in Chester, New Jersey, which served as the springboard for many professional woodworkers on the East Coast today. Wally Jr., along with his brothers Bruce and Marc, were an integral part of the school’s success.

I was happy to hear Mr. Sawdust School of Professional Woodworking opened again by his son Wallace Kunkel. I have known the school 35 years ago, hired people who went to the school in my shop. The school was run for more than a decade. Wally was teaching with his father. Mr. Sawdust died in 1997 and the school closed. Wally, his son started woodworking business with his brothers. He did the finest millwork and fine furniture making for wealthy people in New Jersey. After two decades, Wally opened the school to carry on his father’s legacy and because he loves teaching. If you want to learn woodworking, this is the school you want to take classes. Machine woodworking or hand tools you can learn on the highest level from the master of fine furniture making, Wallace Kunkel. I believe in him and recommend him very highly.
